What You Need To Know About Gout

Learn how gout affects the foot and ankle and how we help patients find relief.

Understanding Gout in the Foot and Ankle

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that commonly affects the joints of the foot and ankle, particularly the big toe. It is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. When uric acid levels become too high, crystals form in the joints, leading to sudden, intense pain, redness, and swelling. The condition often begins in the big toe joint but can also affect the ankle, midfoot, and other joints of the lower extremity.

Symptoms of gout include sudden and severe joint pain that often starts at night, swelling, redness, and warmth around the affected joint, and extreme tenderness that can make it painful to wear shoes. Many patients also experience limited joint mobility and recurrent attacks that may affect different locations in the foot and ankle.

Several factors can raise your risk of developing gout, including high uric acid levels in the blood (hyperuricemia), genetics and family history, diets high in red meat, seafood, or alcohol, and medical conditions such as kidney disease, obesity, and diabetes. Certain medications that raise uric acid levels can also contribute to flare-ups.

At the Foot Care Center, gout diagnosis includes a physical examination, joint fluid analysis to identify uric acid crystals, blood tests to measure uric acid levels, and X-rays or ultrasound to evaluate joint damage or tophi. If you are experiencing sudden joint pain in your foot or ankle, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation so we can confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment right away.

Managing Gout Attacks and Preventing Recurrence

At the Foot Care Center, our podiatrists provide comprehensive care for patients with gout in the foot and ankle. We offer rapid relief during painful attacks and create customized long-term management plans to reduce recurrence and protect joint health.

During an acute gout attack, treatment focuses on calming inflammation and easing pain as quickly as possible. This may include anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), colchicine to reduce flare-up severity, corticosteroid injections for pain relief, and rest, ice, and elevation to control swelling.

Long-term gout management is aimed at lowering uric acid levels and preventing future attacks. Our approach may include medications such as allopurinol or febuxostat to lower uric acid, lifestyle modifications including diet and hydration, weight management to reduce pressure on foot and ankle joints, and guidance on avoiding foods and drinks that trigger flare-ups.

Without treatment, gout can lead to joint damage and deformity, chronic pain and stiffness, the development of tophi (hard uric acid deposits), and an increased risk of kidney stones. Addressing gout early helps protect your joints and quality of life.

Gout can be extremely painful, but with expert care and proper treatment, flare-ups can be managed and future attacks prevented. If you are experiencing sudden joint pain in your foot or ankle, the Foot Care Center is here to help you find relief and restore mobility.
