What You Need To Know
How custom orthotics work and what to expect when you visit our office.
Custom Orthotics Made In Our Office
The Foot Care Center makes custom orthotics in the office daily. Our orthotics are soft and cushioned, but also durable and supportive. We have a footwear specialist who makes the orthotics in the office both quickly and easily.
Orthotics are a great conservative way to treat many foot ailments. They work by supporting the foot, redistributing pressure, and correcting mechanical issues that contribute to pain in the feet, ankles, and legs. For many patients, a well-fitted orthotic can reduce discomfort without the need for more invasive treatment.
Taping is usually applied to your feet first to gauge if orthotics are the best option for you. The taping is worn for 2-3 days and then removed. The taping imitates an orthotic, and patients often feel relief when their feet are taped. If the taping helps, the patient is then scanned for their custom orthotics. Scanning only takes a few minutes and is done by the doctor using our Amfit machine.
Some common issues that orthotics treat are plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuromas, flat feet, ankle pain, and gait issues. If any of these sound familiar, or if you have ongoing pain that has not responded to rest or better shoes, an evaluation is a good next step.
Your new custom orthotics will be ready by your next appointment. Schedule a visit and we will walk you through the process from taping to fitting.
Bracing and Preventive Foot Care
Beyond custom orthotics, preventive foot care plays a big role in keeping you active and comfortable. Small changes in daily habits, footwear, and support can help you avoid many of the problems that bring patients into our office in the first place.
Bracing is another conservative option we may recommend alongside or in place of orthotics. Ankle braces and supportive devices can stabilize joints after an injury, protect weak or arthritic areas, and give confidence during walking or activity. The right brace depends on your diagnosis, your activity level, and the shoes you wear most often.
Good footwear matters too. Shoes that fit properly, offer arch support, and match the shape of your foot can prevent a wide range of problems. During your visit we can talk through what to look for when shopping for shoes and how your current footwear may be helping or hurting your feet.
Routine check-ins are also part of prevention. If you have diabetes, circulation concerns, a history of foot pain, or you are simply on your feet all day, regular podiatry visits can catch small issues before they become bigger ones.
Our podiatry office can also discuss any diagnostic needs as it applies to your specific case of leg, foot, and ankle pain. Do not ignore any type of pain, swelling, or discomfort, and reach out when something does not feel right.
